( wanda is certainly not about to admit that she's already at the place, having meandered her way here while waiting. so, she doesn't admit it. )
it's okay. i can make it there , i know where it is. see you.
( it's a bit inexplicable why she is so stoic about texting, but it's a relatively new way for her to communicate with others that she will have to grow into, be less stiff about. scott will do what he needs to do in that hour; wanda will sit down by the front desk of the place, constantly repeating that she's waiting for someone while glancing toward the door every once in a while, otherwise focusing on playing snake on her phone. )
[ It does take Scott an hour to reach the place. Between washing off the grime and sweat from his skin, and picking out clothes that aren't riddled with holes, he's had quite the preparation. Add to that was when his bike won't start during his initial try, and he had to tinker with it again slightly, before it successfully starts.
He's quick to enter the building once he had triumphantly parked his bike somewhere he knows it won't get stolen, and greets her with a friendly smile. ]
Hope you weren't waiting too long. Sorry about that.
[ He swiftly tells the front desk "for two please" before turning back to Wanda. ] So, did you end up applying? [ For the job they talked about when they first met, he means. ]
( scott's arrival inadvertently makes her lose at snake, but instead of it being annoying, it's just another high score to try and reach later on. she hops off the stool, pickets her phone, and walks up to him.
she glances at the person at the front desk, hoping for no comment about how long she's actually been waiting, before saying, )
I had time. Don't worry.
( then proceeds to lean against the counter, waiting for scott to lead. his question sparks no real recognition of their previous conversation for a moment before it clicks in place. )
Oh, thatβ
( she's pretty pleased with her shift and the work she has to do. )
Yesβ yeah, working at the register. Sometimes I have to stock shelves, but it's not that bad.
[ The front desk staff took note of Scott's words and proceeds to check them in, brandishing a pair of shoes after shuffling a bit. While they do that, Scott continues his conversation with Wanda, amused that she almost forgot their first meeting's topic of conversation. ]
Good. I started my shifts, too. Mostly carrying heavy boxes. No big deal.
[ Sometimes, he also stock shelves if the person doing it doesn't come in. Once the shoes are ready, Scott takes both pairs and ushers Wanda inside. Of course, the establishment is playing country music. ]
I work night shifts, though, so I guess that's why I don't see you.
( 'no big deal' says a guy with the aura of someone who seems to find no issue with the hard work that comes with carrying boxes. heavy ones at that. it reminds her of steve a little, but steve had reason to find heavy things not heavy at all.
wanda raises a brow, mostly at the shoes, but goes along with him. immediately, the country music puts her off, mostly in the way that it sounds so jarring, what with the language that isn't at all english. it sounds so weirdβ )
I bet it's quiet at work at night.
( she frowns, now, tilting her head up to look at him. )
[ Scott nods as he picks up their shoes, making their way towards where the bowling alleys are. ]
Quiet and usually passes quickly. [ If he's not doing shifts with Logan, at least. ] Hardly any trouble, too. Thing is, with the heatwave, it's still not very ideal.
[ Because manual labor means one sweats a lot and with the sweltering heat, it has been a time. As soon as Scott picks an empty lane, he gives Wanda her pair of shoes. ]
Change into these. We'll need it. [ He's already starting to change his while an amused smile graces his lips once he remembers her comment about the country music. ] The music's really jarring, isn't it? I wonder if they picked the genre up from us.
That's why you pick out jobs where there's air conditioning.
( like the easy choice of working at the register, even if the work is simple and mundane. not like they could have predicted the heatwave, given how new and unfamiliar they were to the place.
grabbing at the pair of shoes, wanda sits down on the bench designated to their lane. )
Clown shoes? ( she ponders out loud, before starting to unlace her boots. she knows enough about the concept of bowling to not question having to change into the shoes. a scrunch of her nose in his direction, she shrugs, the dim and neon lights of the place being more jarring to her than the noise. ) Is country something you listened to before here?
( in any caseβ )
Thanks for paying, by the way.
( she did notice, and it won't go without thanking. )
[ Scott's eyebrows shoot up in agreement when Wanda tells him to pick jobs where there's airconditioning. The heatwave might've been unprecedented, but it's a good suggestion nonetheless especially when the state of everything around here can be unpredictable.
Finishing with his shoes, Scott inspects the bowling balls they have in this place. Not great, but not bad. ]
No problem. [ On paying, he means. ] Haven't really listened to country a lot. It's not my thing, but I also don't have strong feelings about it.
[ If it's in the radio, sure, why not? But he won't go out of his way to actually listen to it. After eyeing the lane, he looks back at Wanda. ] So, I take it you know how to play this? [ Just gauging how much he needs to teach her. ]
( so, scott isn't necessarily the type who gets too concerned with music. it's really nothing, in the grand scheme of things, but it tells wanda a little bit about him. and that curiosity grows in her, soβ
once she's got her shoes on, boots neatly tucked back under the bench, she glances up at him. )
I've seen how it's played, but I don't know how the points work. ( and has never actually thrown a bowling ball down the lane as a matter of factβ ) I can probably figure it out if you go first.
( she stands up, walking up to him. )
What music would you change their playlist with, then?
[ Scott replies when she tells him to go first. She's right, demonstration usually helps someone learn better. So without further ado, Scott picks up a ball, fingers correctly inserting inside those three holes, and carries it with ease before his chest. He has the posture of someone who has obviously played this before, but how good remains to be seen.
Walking to the lane, he stops just before the mark on the floor, crouches and slowly walks before the actual lane. Once he's on it, Scott goes into position, and throws the ball.
It's a strike.
He turns to Wanda with a smile. ] Maybe rock. Grunge if I have to pick a subgenre.
( as he makes his way to the lane, manages the position necessary to throw the ball, wanda just about does a quiet effort to imitate him with stiff movements on the side. scott manages to land a strike with the confidence of someone who has either done this plenty in the past or someone who trusts his own skills enough.
she can't help but smile back, taken aback a little by how smooth the whole thing was. )
You're just going to act like getting all the pins down was no big deal, huh.
( though the smile also stems from how she thinks his choice of music is pretty cool. it's not her style, necessarily, but she's liked what she's heard of it. she moves towards the ramps where the balls are and checks out the few different colorful options that she has. )
Have you been coming here a lot? ( she grabs at a highlighter-orange ball. ) Working on the whole 'community' thing?
( wanda will take her time to get from holding the ball to throwing it; she needs to get confident with it first. )
[ Her earlier comment about acting like the strike was no big deal receives a proud smile from Scott, if not a slowly forming smirk. He won't dignify that with an answer so he won't appear too cocky (even if he is) and instead, focuses on her questions. ]
Here in the Bowling Center? No, but I've been keeping tabs.
[ In reference to the recent murder that transpired here which he learned recently. Scott watches her stance, and without even a second thought, as if he's used to doing this back home, approaches her to correct some of her missteps. Which aren't a lot, to be fair. Just minor ones he just can't help but notice and fix. ]
Maybe this is how I start building community. [ He jokes, in reference to teaching her a little about bowling. ]
