No Lifeguard on Duty
Summary
What's going on?
An
unexpected heat wave in mid-June, coupled with the cycling shutdown of all air conditioning units in motels across the Blocks, has made the summer unbearable. Meanwhile, the ever-eager
storm chaser,
Felix Bjurstrom, has uncovered a
fancy resort with a pool in a diffusion zone only 1 hour out from Panorama. Lucky, right? Well...kind of. It's got some quirks.
When is this happening?
June 10 - 30
What should I know?
- This area is one of many diffusion zones that appear throughout the planet.
- A storm chaser is someone dedicated to studying the cosmic phenomenon in the Diadem. Felix is a pioneer in his field.
- A winding highway filled with old empty barrels will take you to the zone.
- Characters can travel with a friend to save on gas! Parking's limited, so it might not be a bad idea.
- At any given time, there's max several dozen visitors. Most work long hours, some are traveling through the diffusion zones, and others prefer not to risk the drive or waste precious gas, so it won't draw a huge crowd (but there's still a crowd!).
- This is a mingle rather than an event. Plot-heavy elements will be minor. The game's first proper event will be posted in July!
What does my character know?
- Having lost his phone, Felix will spread the word using good old-fashioned printed posters that he's put up around Panorama. A young woman is seen helping him. They appear to be close. Some say that's his daughter.
- Though the timing is impossible to predict accurately, Felix believes that due to this zone's unusual proximity to an anchor point, it has a high chance of persisting for 2-3 weeks.
- Directions are printed on the posters, though characters are also free to stumble across the zone by accident.

Introduction
The resort looks like your typical upscale vacation spot: a beautiful pool, lovely cabins, and plenty of pool chairs. The sky is
perpetually nighttime and there are
two moons. One moon is smaller than its sister and glows purple. The other looks like the Earth's moon. The weather is
pleasantly warm. In fact, conditions are almost
too perfect.
Other
fluxdrifts are here, too, and you might come across them, all of whom are taking advantage of the pool. They'll converse superficially with you and will come and go randomly. You'll want to keep a close eye on your belongings. Other than cooling off, this isn't a bad place to start making connections. Life in the Diadem is better when you've got allies if not friends.
Just outside the resort is a
spacious parking lot, designed for visitors. Nobody's following parking rules so put your car anywhere it fits. If you get blocked in, well, that's a problem for when you leave.
At the end of June, the diffusion zone will flicker and morph into an unremarkable overgrown park, long abandoned to the decades.
Prompts
As you wander around, you discover deactivated androids in many of the poolside huts. These androids cannot be mistaken for any organic species: their chassis is metal, and their heads are shiny. Circuits and wires are visible. But each is dressed distinctly human in a way that borders on disturbing. You spot lipstick drawn on some of the metal faces, as though they're playing dress up...or as if they don't realize they aren't human. One android is frozen in place with a diary clutched in its hands. Another has a hairbrush for its nonexistent hair.
Something seems to have destroyed them—perhaps a powerful EMP wave that knocked them all out. All except one.
The Bartender
The poolside bar is at the eastern end of the resort. There are plenty of seats. A few are occupied by deactivated androids. The bartender is also an android and appears to be the only functional one in this place. He speaks with a modulated voice and has a neutral accent. He exhibits the following behaviors if you sit at his bar:
- Icebreaker. Whether you're alone or with a companion, he'll try to get you all to be friends, asking random self-generated icebreaker questions. He'll be visibly disappointed if you don't play along.
- Bartending. While cheerful, he can't make the correct drink: it's always too strong, incredibly weak, added salt instead of sugar, messed up the ice. He's obviously doing his best, but it's just not working. The harder he tries, the worse he performs until it becomes a comedy of errors with stuff falling over, ice dumped in your lap, champagne corks flying, and any number of slapstick mishaps. You can help him out by mixing the drink yourself.
If you're nice to him, he'll introduce himself as Thomas Lustras. He's happy to
tell you about his son. Strange, you think, but who says androids can't have paternal instincts? Yet, when the android takes out his wallet to show you a photo of his son—named Edward Lustras—the picture is that of a
human child, roughly 5 years old, in the arms of his
human father.
The driver's license in the same wallet confirms that Thomas is (was?) a real person. The picture on the license matches the human male in the photo. A half-scorched business card states that Thomas was a consultant at Outer Rim Resettlements. Thomas believes he's on a company retreat and wistfully declares he's eager to return home to his son.
Maybe don't look too closely. After all, this place will soon disappear. And so will he.
The Grill
It's not a vacation without a grill! Not a grillable item is in sight, though, so you'll have to rely on what you can bring out of Panorama. Some of the visiting drifters will pitch in to share, unloading hotdogs (some synthetic, others authentic, and some far past expiry), burger patties (same) and buns, and "kebabs" made of blocky frozen vegetable squares. The squares vaguely resemble corn, mushrooms, and pineapple. The texture is passable, like a flavor-infused block of tofu.
Fire up the grill and take turns grilling. You'll also have to manage the propane. The grill's also prone to sputtering out, requiring regular minor repairs to get it back up and going. Any loose bolts or screws can be taken out of the dead androids to replace the rusty ones in the grill. You're unsure if you should feel uncomfortable doing that or what, but it is a solution.
Parking Woes
Like any crowded event, the parking lot can get chaotic, and the lawlessness of the diffusion zones doesn't help. While some are happy to help barbecue, others are more interested in picking fights over who got to the parking space first. It won't take much for a fistfight to break out, and a knife fight isn't out of the question, either, though nobody'll be killed (this time).
You can let the troublemakers beat each other, or you can try to intervene if somebody who doesn't deserve it is getting harassed. Just avoid causing too much of a scene. Breaking noses is acceptable; gutting someone head to toe is not. There are Enforcers visiting the zone, and if you interfere with their nice pool time, they won't hesitate to haul away everybody involved and make you sit in jail for a few days.
Jayce Talis | Arcane (open!)
android : )
He gingerly made his way over, leaning over with a curious look.]]
Are they alri--!!
[[POW.]]
[[OHKO. Down he went.]]
no.... the babby....
Hey - [ crouching down next to An Zhe, eyes wide: ] are you alright?
[ He gingerly touches his shoulder, concern etched across his expression. Another fluxdrift, a middle-aged woman with a shock of grey hair, crouches down next to them. "What the hell was that?" she asks Jayce, followed by - "Hey kid, you hit your head?"
The android remains motionless behind them. ]

He eased his eyes open just in time for a dribble of blood to come leaking out of his nose.]]
… I’m… sorry?

She'll shove the tissue in his hand if he doesn't take it immediately, and move to help him sit up.

poolside!
And yet. The movement isn't soundless as he'd hoped since instead it drags on the ground with an unpleasantly loud scraping noise. The discordance of it in the (relative) quiet has his wings pulling back in displeasure though before he can sit, the man nearby startles awake. And for some reason, says sorry to him first. ]
You are quite fine where you are. I didn't mean to wake you while moving this chair but it seems it had other plans. [ Sunday pauses with the full intention of adding a bit to that apology in his ongoing attempts to issue Actual Apologies these days, but something else takes precedence as the man starts searching around him not a second later. ] Are you... alright?
[ The brief surprise he picked up as the other man woke could simply be it, but sometimes simply asking is better. ]
no subject
Yeah - I'm - [ a light, frustrated exhale ] - I think I lost something.
[ There's tension in his voice. He doesn't immediately fire off accusations, even if it seems obvious that someone must've lifted his belt and tools while he was sleeping. Giving up on the search of the immediate area, Jayce hauls himself back up to his feet, his gaze slipping across the area (maybe Viktor took the tools to work on one of those androids - not that he needs tools...) before landing on the stranger and his chair again. Jayce is familiar with vastaya, so non-human features aren't a shock to him.
He rubs the back of his neck, tension stiffening his shoulders. ]
... any chance you saw someone walk by with a toolbelt?
no subject
A toolbelt... I didn't pass anyone on my way to here but I noticed someone leave in that direction a few moments ago, though not whether they carried anything with them.
[ A gesture of one hand in said direction towards the adjacent side of the pool with more seating and less visible places, and those words offered with apologetic regret. Something which makes sense to idly look for in hindsight, though it doesn't offer much help in the present. Which is all Sunday needs o decide to set down the book in his hands onto the chair for later when reading the history of a region unknown to him seems far less important. ]
It would be bold for someone to take something from you. [ Bold - but not unheard of no matter the situation. ] Do you recall if anyone was nearby before you fell asleep?

drive-by
It's likely the only reason she happens to be nearby enough to watch the hit across his face.
Her shout is distant, but her voice and its sharpness is distinct enough:] HA! Nice one! Learn to dodge better, hammerman!
[If he tries to find her to retort, she's already long gone, quick and speedy with only a pink Shimmer-trail remaining as the only sign she was actually there. He wouldn't want to worry that he was seeing things, right? That'd be crazy.]
no subject
That's more paranoid than he's at right now.
Excuse him while he stews for a bit and ices his black eye. ]
charles; (tdm)
[ It means we're all more similar than we might think. There's a tired, rueful smile. ]
It's not a commonality I hoped to bond over...
[ In his world, the reputation of mages wasn't exactly unearned in the past either. But there has to be a middle ground, somewhere, in all these splintered universes.
Jayce shifts his weight, rubbing at his right shoulder. ]
But I'd like to hear more about your work sometime.
[ There's hesitance in his voice again, uncharacteristic for him - though a stranger wouldn't know that. The weight of his thoughts, what he's just been through and seen - the loneliness of waking up here by himself after everything - it all dampens his natural curiosity just as swiftly as it's taken root. ]
no subject
[ Charles shrugs a shoulder with a faint smile in return. He is used to conflict. The situation back home is an every day concern, and now that he plans on beginning his school again and wading into the complications again, he needs to get his armor back on. But it is not important here. That instinct is just still there.
Of course he would much rather hear about worlds in which people with different abilities were able to find lasting peace and togetherness. Where his foolish dream became a reality. It's ultimately not a surprise to hear the struggle crosses universes. ]
I'd be happy to share, Jayce. It's always good to meet other scientists. I've been bereft, somewhat, outside of my long-term companion Hank. This is the longest I've been without him, it's very strange.
[ Charles clearly never appreciated him as much as he should have, he sees that now, on the other end of it. It reminds him of Raven, who he also got used to as a constant companion he took for granted, until she was gone leaving a gaping hole. Now there is a Hank-shaped one on top of it. ]
no subject
When Charles mentions Hank again, though - ]
Yeah. I know the feeling. [ He offers a small smile, his eyes pained and his voice rough. His gaze shifts out toward the rest of the market, not quite searching. With his right hand he grips his scarred left wrist, the rune stone missing when he arrived. ]
... I'm waiting for my partner to show up.
[ He says this as though it's a given.
Because if he doesn't - Jayce will find him himself. Whatever it takes. ]

Three things happen in rapid succession:
Laszlo says something along the lines of 'you fucking shit-brained lobcock.'
Laszlo swings at the automaton's face.
The automaton's head pops clean off and goes flying into the distance.]

Jayce's wide gaze had followed its path, the decapitated android's body having fallen in his lap
cradled like a headless, robotic Jesus in the pieta, which does not exist in Runeterra, probably. As the alarm in the distance sounds, he turns to the culprit-victim, vague concern coloring what is mostly shock and confusion at what just happened. ]- are you alright?
[ ... he did get punched. ]
no subject
He glances down. Right. There was a man there.]
Just a bit startled. My apologies.
[Despite having just been cold-cocked in the face by a metal fist, there is no evidence of injury whatsoever. Also totally normal!]

parking lot.
Sciel perks up when she hears his voice, glancing his way. She's just been standing there, actually, peering at the truck he has with some...concern. It looks to be in terrible shape, like it'll break apart at any moment. ]
Your poor truck. Can't believe you managed to get it anywhere, looking like that.
[ The way she says it, it's like she's talking about an animal rather than just a large piece of metal. ]
This is what they gave you?
no subject
It's not as bad as it looks, really -
[ He'll walk over to the hood and lift it open. Despite the unfortunate exterior, the engine inside looks as though it's been cleaned fairly recently, no sign of rust or oil gone bad gunking up anything. ]
It's been good practice, getting to know how these engines work.
[ They'll fix up the exterior too, eventually. ]
no subject
I've never driven before. Or had a car.
[ Or anything like it. The Fracture happened so long ago and what was left of Lumière needed to be repurposed over the years for Expeditions. Anything that might've been this complicated was likely used before.
Like that bloody Ferris Wheel. What a joke. ]
Do you have any tips? Mine looks...quite nice, actually-- [ Oops, sorry, Jayce. ] But I don't know the first thing about engines or maintenance. I'm a farmer so machines have never been a specialty of mine.

parking lot!
At least until — there's a man who's got his back against a beat-up truck, face-to-face with three men who don't look friendly. Hard to tell what exactly is going on but—
One of the men have a dagger held behind their back.
She moves before she can really think about it — there's an opening just between two bodies she manages to slip through, a smile on her face, looking directly at Jayce. ]
Ah, I was wondering when you'd arrive. [ With a little nod, and everything. ] Who are these people? [ There's a hand on the hilt of the sword at her side, while she gives the dagger-holding Fluxdrift a side-long glance. Surely opportunists won't pick a fight against someone who's Clearly armed, right? She didn't just accidentally escalate this, right? ]
no subject
It's not Cait. Thankfully. His gaze falls on the sword, and while the men are looking amongst each other trying to reassess - Jayce takes his chance to open the door and grab for the hammer. ]
They're lost - mistook my truck for their own. [ He points with he hammer in the opposite direction. There's tension in his expression. ] Try a few rows down that way.
[ 'Yeah, uh - maybe...' one of the men seems to have lost his nerve, glancing at the others. ]
no subject
One of them — the one with the dagger — shakes his head. Throwing all the pretense aside to brandish the dagger with a 'Like hell we are!', pointing the tip of it right at Jayce. Which... unfortunately shakes the rest of them into action, armed or otherwise, crowding them further.
'Bet you're not gonna do anything with that, are ya?' With a jerk of his head towards of some Enforcers down the way. 'Just step away from the truck — and no one gets hurt.'
Lucina glances over to Jayce. ] Can you fight? [ The bluff's been called. The sword's not an option right now, and her hand to hand is no where as good as her swordsmanship — which means she can't protect him, if he can't. ]

android
Nandor has never met this man in his life, and he will kill anyone who tries to hurt him. Because he's Batman. And Batman historically has no issue with violently murdering his nemesis.
Closing the distance between them, Nandor snatches a hand out and grabs the android by the fabric of its shirt. He yanks it upward, throwing it above his head and smashing it on the ground with a triumphant yell and a lot of clattering.
Smiling, Nandor reaches out and clasps Jayce's shoulder.]
You are safe now.
no subject
I - thank you?
[ He lowers his hand from his face, staring at the broken body of the android in dismay, his gaze following a trail of wires to a black square floating at the surface of the pool. ]
... my phone battery.
[ Said battery begins to sink. ]

Nandor's eyes follow Jayce's to the pool, just in time to watch his battery sink.]
